It always happens right when the afternoon wind picks up. You decide it’s time to pack up the beach camp, so you walk over to your pop-up canopy tent to collapse the frame. You locate the little plastic “quick-release” button on the metal leg—the one that is supposed to smoothly glide inward so the tent can slide down.
Instead, it is completely jammed with a mixture of salt spray and fine sand. You press it with your thumb. Nothing. You press it with a key. It won’t budge. You end up using all your body weight, bruising your fingers, and yelling profanities at a piece of aluminum while the wind tries to launch the canopy into orbit like a giant kite. There is no fury quite like being defeated by a two-cent piece of plastic at the end of a long, exhausting day in the sun.
