The “Self-Checkout” Unexpected Item

“Unexpected item in the bagging area.”

These six words have the power to raise the blood pressure of even the most zen-like individual. The self-checkout was sold to us as a miracle of efficiency—a way to bypass the lines and handle our own business. In reality, it’s a high-stakes performance art piece where the computer is both the director and the harshest critic.

The machine is incredibly judgmental. You scan a bag of chips and place it gently into the bag. Unexpected item. You take the chips out. Please place the item in the bagging area. You put them back in. Unexpected item. Please wait for assistance. Now you are standing there, a grown adult with a bag of Doritos, waiting for a bored teenager with a plastic lanyard to come over and “clear” you.

Man at self checkout with unexpected item

The self-checkout treats every shopper like a sophisticated international jewel thief. If you use your own reusable bag, the weight sensor has a nervous breakdown. If you try to buy a single lime that doesn’t have a barcode, you have to navigate a menu system that feels like you’re trying to launch a satellite.

We’ve replaced human interaction with a machine that doesn’t trust us and a “Help” light that flashes like a beacon of failure. It is the “self” checkout that requires more help than the regular one. We’ve become unpaid employees of the grocery store, and our only reward is the mounting frustration of being told we don’t know how to put a gallon of milk in a plastic bag.
