If you take an early morning stroll along Crystal Beach, you usually know what to expect. You’ll probably pass a jogger or two hitting their stride, a few early-rising campers sipping coffee outside their tents, and the usual dedicated fishermen casting lines into the surf, hoping for the big catch of the day.
But Monday morning offered a completely different kind of catch—standing on the shoreline was a group of men from East Texas doing something you don’t see every day between the dunes and the waves: they were playing a full-fledged round of golf.
From Fairways to the Gulf
This quirky beachside tournament isn’t just a random impulse; it’s a beautifully evolved piece of family history. The tradition started 27 years ago with three college friends. Back then, their annual family trip to Crystal Beach included a trek over to Galveston to play a traditional round on a proper golf course.
As the years rolled by, the families grew, but the tradition remained. Sons and sons-in-law were folded into the lineup. However, packing up and leaving for an all-day golf outing began to feel like a subtraction from the main event: family time.
Six years ago, they made an executive decision. They abandoned the traditional green fairways to spend more time with their families—but they didn’t abandon the clubs. Instead, they brought the game to the Gulf.
The 6:00 AM Tee Time
Now, before the beach crowds arrive, the crew sets up a custom 5-hole course running down the shoreline. They play five holes out and four holes back in, culminating in a unique nine-hole, par-27 round.
And don’t let the casual setting fool you; the competition is real. The morning features a “Closest to the Pin” challenge and a “Longest Putting Drive” (which takes some serious skill when you’re dodging seashells and seaweed).

The group has now expanded to nine players, and the roster isn’t stopping there. As I chatted with the guys, they pointed out the next generation waiting in the wings. “They are already working on their swing,” one proud dad laughed.
By the time the rest of the beach was just waking up, the East Texas crew was wrapping up their final hole—trading their clubs for beach chairs, having kept their 27-year tradition alive without missing a single minute of family time.
So, next time you take an early walk on Crystal Beach, keep your eyes on the horizon, but maybe keep your head on a swivel. You just might hear a soft “Fore!” echoing over the crashing waves.
