Low to the Ground, High on Spirit: The Wiener Dogs Take Crystal Beach!

If you think the fastest things on the Bolivar Peninsula have fins or wings, you clearly haven’t witnessed the Saturday morning tradition at the Texas Crab Festival. The annual Wiener Dog Races have officially cemented their status as one of the festival’s biggest crowd-pleasers, proving that you don’t need long legs to have a massive heart (or a massive following).

A Community Effort

The magic behind the “dash of the dachshunds” starts with the dedicated team at Bay Vue Methodist Church. This year, a small army of 31 volunteers—comprising church members, the energetic Lazy Ladies Aerobics group, and local friends—coordinated the chaos to ensure every pup had its day.

Raring to Race

The 2026 starting lineup featured 20 dogs with serious commitment. The “Long Distance Award” could have gone to two specific competitors: one pup who trekked all the way from San Antonio, and another dedicated traveler who drove back from North Carolina just to ensure they didn’t miss their heat!

By the time the gates were ready to open, the excitement was palpable. Spectators gathered around the track three and four deep, eager for a glimpse of the low-profile athletes.

The Parade of Pups

Before the sprinting began, emcee Jim Denys took to the mic to introduce the stars of the show. Owners and their dogs paraded around the track, basking in the cheers of the crowd. It was a moment of pure pageantry—before the serious business of chasing toys and treats took over.

The Road to the Podium

The competition was fierce, narrowing down through four primary heats and two semifinals. When the dust finally settled on the final heat, it was a clean sweep for the long-haired males!

  • 1st Place: The legendary Forest, a seasoned veteran boasting over 60 trophies, showed the youngsters how it’s done. Alongside handler Paula Boxie from San Antonio, Forest added one more gold to his mantle.
  • 2nd Place: Dax, handled by Aden Guerrero, put up a valiant effort to secure the silver.
  • 3rd Place: Dallas, handled by Ashtyn Guerrero (spouse of Aden), rounded out the podium. The drive home to Angleton surely featured some celebratory treats for these two champion households!
Winning dogs with owners at the Texas Crab Festival Wiener Dog Races

A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers, handlers, and four-legged racers who make this event a highlight of the Texas Crab Festival. Whether they ran straight for the finish line or got distracted by a stray crumb halfway through, every dog was a winner in the eyes of the crowd!
