Bull Riding Charges Back Into Bolivar

A Resounding Success at Swedes Park

After months of meticulous planning and weeks of physical preparation, the Bolivar Arena Association (BAA) officially brought the thunder back to town this past Saturday. For months, locals passing by Swedes Park watched with curiosity as empty bleachers stood in the middle of an overgrown, neglected field. This weekend, that curiosity turned into a roar of approval.

The BAA performed a remarkable feat of transformation, turning a patch of unused land into a professional-grade bull riding arena. The result? Swedes Park was alive, pulsing with the energy of bulls, brave riders, and a large, enthusiastic crowd.

A Community Undeterred

Even a brief rain shower couldn’t dampen the spirits of the attendees. If anything, the cooling mist added to the authentic rodeo atmosphere. The event kicked off with the fan-favorite mutton busting, featuring local kids gripping tightly to full-fleeced sheep. The crowd cheered wildly as the youngsters tested their mettle, setting the stage for the high-stakes action to follow.

The Main Event: 8 Seconds of Fury

By the time the main event began, the bleachers were packed to capacity. The air was thick with anticipation as riders prepared to compete for a significant cash prize, each aiming to survive the ultimate test of man versus beast: staying atop a raging bull for 8 seconds.

The high-octane intensity of round one gave way to a lighter fan favorite as local youngsters took over the arena for the Sheep Scramble. It was a blur of laughter and fast-moving feet as the kids chased a sheep across the dirt, each one determined to be the lucky winner to snag the ribbon from its neck.

Once the dust settled from the scramble, it was back to business with the bulls. The competition spanned two more rounds of action, testing the skill and resolve of every athlete involved. While several riders displayed incredible heart, one name ultimately rose above the rest to claim the title.

The Champion’s Circle

AJ Hatchett, hailing from Wharton, put on a masterclass in balance and bravery. After dominating the three rounds of competition, Hatchett took home the top money and earned the coveted—and terrifying—chance to ride the Bonus Bull.

Though he was ultimately unable to stay on that “monster” of a bull for the full duration, Hatchett didn’t leave empty-handed. Between his round wins and overall placement, he pocketed nearly $3,000 for his night’s work.

As the dust settled on Swedes Park, the sentiment among the crowd was unanimous: Bolivar is a rodeo town once again. The BAA has set a high bar for the future, and the community is already looking forward to the next time the chutes open.

Thank you Tom for such a good article. It was great to finally be able to show off what our vision is. The arena planned will be about 3 times the size of what was there and we are determined to make it happen.
