It was a “dual ribbon cutting” and a “double dose” of celebration at The Salty Mermaid last week as the beloved local boutique marked five years of success on the Bolivar Peninsula. The event, hosted jointly by the Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, drew a standing-room-only crowd of board members, community leaders, and “adoring customers” who packed the store to capacity. While the occasion was intended to celebrate half a decade of business, owner Shauna Williams had an even bigger surprise in store for those in attendance.
A “Salty” Expansion to the Strand
During the ceremony, Williams took the microphone to share an “important announcement” that had the crowd buzzing. After a theatrical drum roll, she revealed that The Salty Mermaid is officially becoming a chain.
“Salty Mermaid is now going to be a chain and we will have two locations,” Williams announced. “We will be right near Riondo’s on the Strand in Galveston.”
The expansion comes as a result of the upcoming retirement of the owner of Tina’s on the Strand. Williams was quick to reassure her loyal Crystal Beach customers that the peninsula remains the heart of her operation. “No, we’re not going anywhere. This is our home. This is our anchor store, but we just need to spread a little mermaid love over into Galveston.”
Community and Connection
The ceremony was a testament to the strong ties between the two coastal communities. Gina Spagnola, Executive Director of the Galveston Chamber, along with “Navigators” and board members, presented Williams with plaques and “goodies” to commemorate the store’s milestone.
Williams, who has served on the Bolivar Chamber board for over four years and has been a member of the Galveston Chamber for three, emphasized that community involvement is the “paramount for the success of businesses, especially in a small town.”
The emotional peak of the afternoon came when Williams’ mother shared a few words, attributing her daughter’s success to her inner light. “We can all be beautiful on the outside, but it takes it from the inside,” she told the crowd.
Celebrations and Champagne
Following the official dual ribbon cutting, the celebration shifted into high gear. Attendees toasted the 5th anniversary with champagne and cupcakes while browsing the shop’s eclectic mix of beachy apparel, gifts, and custom baskets.
The Salty Mermaid, located at 2501 Highway 87 in Crystal Beach, continues to be a hub for community events, fashion shows, and private shopping parties. With a second location now on the horizon for Galveston’s historic Strand, the “Mermaid” brand is officially making waves across the ferry.
