The First Annual BAA Golf Tournament Hits the Links

What do you get when a bunch of cowboys trade in their bucking chutes for golf carts and tee off for a great cause? A whole lot of friendly competition, community spirit, and a few unique twists you won’t find on any ordinary PGA tour.

The Bolivar Arena Association (BAA) recently hosted its inaugural golf tournament, bringing together locals and supporters to raise funds for a brand-new rodeo arena right here on the Bolivar Peninsula. With community backing and a lineup of amusing events, the tournament proved that locals know how to mix Western tradition with a great day on the course.

The weekend kicked off with a lively Calcutta on Friday evening. Seven four-person teams were selected by a blind draw, each proudly claiming a unique team name—though a few may have leaned a little bit “off-color,” keeping everyone laughing and the energy high before Saturday morning’s main event. Adding star power to the greens, the event was proudly anchored by presenting sponsor and legendary Professional Rodeo Clown Jackrabbit Harris.

Before the true “shotgun start” on Saturday morning, participants tested their mettle in a winner-take-all putting contest and chipping contest with a true cowboy twist. To take home the prize, golfers had to execute their shots while sitting squarely on a saddle.

As the official golf tournament got underway, technology met tradition. In a golf course first, team captains downloaded a dedicated app to enter scores in real-time, allowing live scoring to keep organizers updated as teams made their way around the course. While the August temperatures climbed, a light breeze made the heat a little more bearable.

Keeping everyone fueled up for the competition, a beverage trailer staffed by BAA volunteers was stocked with cold refreshments. After the first nine holes, golfers paused for a much-needed hydration and food break before charging into the back nine.

Once the final putts dropped and scorecards were tallied, players gathered to swap stories about epic long drives, narrow escapes, and miraculous birdie saves.

Events like this showcase the heart of the Bolivar Peninsula, bringing us one step closer to building a premier home for our local rodeo community. Saddle up, Bolivar—we can’t wait for next year!
