The smoke has cleared, the trophies have been handed out, and the numbers are in. This past Saturday, the Bolivar Peninsula community came together in a show of support for the 26th Annual Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department (PBVFD) BBQ Cookoff.
For over two and a half decades, this annual tradition has stood as a cornerstone event for the peninsula, blending culinary competition with small-town camaraderie. Most importantly, it serves as a fundraiser to keep the local heroes equipped and ready to respond.
Serious Smoke and Jackpot Stakes
The heart of the event was the cook team competition. Pitmasters fired up their rigs early, filling the air with an irresistible aroma.
Teams faced off in four core BBQ categories: Beans, Chicken, Ribs, and Brisket
In addition to the traditional categories, the stakes were raised with Jackpot contests for the best Fajitas and the most creative Bloody Marys.
Feeding the Masses
While the competing teams were chasing trophies, members of the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department were working hard over their own pits. The firefighters cooked up premium BBQ for the event’s visitors. By the end of the day, hundreds of mouth-watering meals were served, complete with “all the fixins.”
Between the delicious food, the selection of raffle and silent auction items, and the live music provided by Lloyd Ramby, the atmosphere was full of community spirit.
Going Once, Going Twice…
The grand finale of the day was the live auction and the official winner announcements. Bidders showed their generosity, raising crucial funds during the auction. The category winners were announced, capping off a day full of fun, food, and fellowship.
“We want to extend a thank you to all the cook teams, the tireless volunteers, and our incredibly generous sponsors,” said representatives of the department.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Since 1956
Events like the BBQ Cookoff are the lifeblood of the PBVFD. Formed in 1956, the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization. Every dollar raised at Saturday’s event goes directly toward maintaining equipment, funding training, and ensuring that when the community calls for help, the PBVFD is ready to answer.!
