Mid-Summer Skywatching: The Best Night Sky Events for the Next Two Weeks

Whether you are setting up a lawn chair on the sand or pulling out a telescope on the deck, the next two weeks offer an incredible lineup of celestial events. Warm summer nights paired with open coastal horizons make mid-to-late July the perfect window to turn your eyes to the heavens.

From a perfectly dark “super” new moon to stunning planetary pairings right after sunset, here is your guide to what’s coming up in the night sky over the next 14 days.

July 14: The “Super New Moon” & Peak Milky Way Viewing

If you only have one night to head away from the bright lights and find a dark stretch of beach, make it Tuesday, July 14.

On this night, the moon goes completely dark, emitting zero lunar light to compete with the stars. Even better, the moon is at perigee (its closest point to Earth in its orbit), creating what astronomers call a “Super New Moon.”

  • The Main Event: This is widely considered the absolute best night of the summer to view the Milky Way. Without a drop of moonlight, our galaxy’s interior core will stand out brilliantly against the dark sky.
  • Where to Look: Look toward the southern sky about an hour after sunset. You’ll be looking for a thick, cloudy band of billions of stars stretching upward from the horizon.
  • The Guidepost: To find the brightest part of the galaxy, look for the constellation Sagittarius. Its most famous stars form a distinct, easy-to-spot “teapot” shape. The center of the Milky Way appears to rise like steam right out of the teapot’s spout.
  • Pro-Tip for Telescope Owners: This pitch-black backdrop is also the perfect window to hunt for Comet 10P/Tempel 2. Passing through the inner solar system near the Capricornus constellation, it will look like a faint, ghostly cosmic smudge with a bright core.

July 16–17: The Crescent Moon, Venus, and the Lion’s Heart

Right after sunset on Thursday, July 16, and Friday, July 17, look toward the western horizon for a spectacular, photogenic display that requires absolutely no special equipment to enjoy.

  • Thursday, July 16: A razor-thin, three-day-old crescent moon will glide incredibly close to Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation Leo. Known historically as the “Little King,” Regulus shines with a distinct blue-white light and marks the heart of the mythical lion.
  • Friday, July 17: The moon continues its nightly march across the sky, shifting positions to sit directly next to brilliant Venus. Venus is currently the brightest “star” in the evening sky, and its pairing with the glowing silver crescent will create a stunning celestial duo visible for about two hours after the sun goes down.

The Second Half of July: Saturn’s Rings Turn “Razor Thin”

If you own a backyard telescope, the next two weeks offer a rare, once-in-a-15-year treat.

Because of the specific orbital geometry between Earth and the ringed planet right now, Saturn’s iconic ring system is tilted at an incredibly narrow, nearly edge-on angle relative to our viewpoint. Instead of seeing the wide, majestic open halos we are used to in textbooks, the rings currently look like a sharp, brilliant line cutting straight through the planet’s disk.

Saturn rises in the east around midnight and climbs high into the southern sky by the pre-dawn hours, making it a great target for early-morning beach walks.

July 27: Mercury Emerges Before Dawn

To wrap up this two-week window, the solar system’s speediest planet makes a brief appearance for the early risers on Monday, July 27.

Look low on the eastern horizon about 75 minutes before sunrise. Mercury will have climbed just high enough out of the sun’s glare to be spotted with the naked eye, glowing firmly at magnitude 1.0 just level with the bright star Pollux.

Tips for the Best Coastal Viewing

Coastal communities have a natural advantage for skywatching thanks to wide-open horizons over the water, but coastal humidity and low-level marine clouds can sometimes play spoiler. For the best view:

  1. Let your eyes adjust: Turn off your flashlight and put away your smartphone for at least 15 minutes. The human eye takes time to adapt to true darkness, which is essential for seeing the subtle clouds of the Milky Way.
  2. Find a dark spot: Move away from bright beach lighting or boardwalk signs. The darker your immediate surroundings, the more the sky will pop.
  3. Check the evening wind: A steady offshore wind often brings clearer, crisper air than a humid onshore breeze pushing mist off the water.
