Lessons Learned

Who knew a 10-week-old puppy could teach these “old dogs” a lesson or two.

First of all, what about this weather? Here we are wearing jackets again. And Monday morning, I picked out a lightweight hoodie, but by the time I went out the door for work, I had to layer up, a long-sleeved t-shirt under the hoodie. So happy I did, because the temp was 54 on my way to work and the wind was so strong, I thought it would blow me over. Reminded me of the time we went to Tulsa for Chyna’s wedding shower. We had Mel with us, so after the shower, we had to go to Pawhuska to see The Frontier Woman. Oh, my goodness, the wind in that state is unreal, no wonder they have tornadoes. What do I know about wind and tornadoes, nothing. I only know Oklahoma is famous for tornadoes, so I just figured that’s why. One thing, for sure, the winds caused fires, we were detoured several times because of fires leaping across the highway. But it was sure worth it to see where Ree Drummond does her thing! Yeah, right!

So, speaking of jackets, our old habit of taking off a jacket and hanging it over a chair is a thing of the past now. With Merry around, anything hanging meant she needed to pull on it. Okay, there went the chair down on the floor. I don’t think it hit her, she was fast enough to get away from it as it crashed to the floor. Maybe it scared her enough, she won’t do it again – I doubt it!

As you all know by now, unless you don’t read my stories (how incredible would that be)? Geez, just kidding …

But seriously, we have this new little friend, her name is Merry. She’s so absolutely cute, we tend to forget how bad she can be. We love her dearly, especially when she’s sweet and rolls over on her back “rub my belly,” she’ll say. Oh Merry!

Merry Grace

Yeah, and the teething, that’s another story … Dr. Matak says the teething lasts for about 6 months. Are you kidding me? My hands and feet are going to be in shreds by then. Dr. Matak suggested keeping frozen carrots for her to chew on. So, I promptly went to The Big Store on our way home from her first appointment at Winnie Vet to purchase a bag of carrots. Peeled and washed them and stuck them in the freezer. She wasn’t too sure about the carrots at first, she’d leave a half here and there, I’d throw the “black” thing away when I’d see it again. Now, she devours the whole thing in minutes. Lesson learned – we’ve had 7 poops (and counting) today. Time to lay off the carrots!

More lessons to learn, I’m sure. “What to do about electric cords?” Anything that looks good to chew on, there’s another hurdle.

You may ask “Why did we want a puppy at our age?”

I’ll let you know, stay tuned. Happy Trails!
