This past Saturday, the Bolivar Arena Association held a lively fundraiser at the Nauti Beaver Hut that brought locals together for a day of fun, food, and friendly competition. The event, a beans and chili cookoff, featured ten talented teams vying for trophies, bragging rights, and the coveted People’s Choice award. Despite the chilly and breezy weather, the atmosphere was nothing short of festive, with the community showing up in full force to support the cause.
The competition began bright and early at 9:00 am, as teams set up their cooking stations and got to work crafting their best recipes. By midday, the enticing aroma of simmering beans and chili filled the air, drawing in eager attendees. Guests purchased sample cups to taste the various entries and cast their votes for the People’s Choice award, while a panel of judges carefully evaluated each dish to determine the winners.
The event featured more than just culinary competition. A spirited live auction added to the excitement, offering unique prizes that drew generous bids. A framed American flag fetched an impressive $400, while a beer mug with weekly $2 refills brought in $200. The energy in the room was contagious, as bidders enthusiastically supported the cause.
As the day progressed, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived: the announcement of the winners. The Road Kill Cookers took home first place in the Beans category, while What A Wreck earned top honors for their chili. The People’s Choice award went to Chili Dunn Right, a crowd favorite. In a heartwarming gesture, the Calcutta winners, who had placed bets on the competing teams, donated their winnings back to the Bolivar Arena Association.

The success of the fundraiser highlighted the strong sense of community and generosity that defines the Bolivar Peninsula. Attendees expressed their hope that this event becomes an annual tradition, bringing people together year after year for good food and a great cause.
As the sun set on this memorable day, the Bolivar Arena Association and the Nauti Beaver Hut could take pride in hosting an event that not only raised funds but also strengthened the bonds of the community. Here’s to looking forward to next year’s cookoff and more delicious competition!
