A Sizzling Saturday: The 25th Annual Port Bolivar VFD BBQ Cookoff Fundraiser

This past Saturday, the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department fired up the community spirit with its 25th Annual BBQ Cookoff Fundraiser—and it was smokin’ hot in all the best ways! The event kicked off on Friday night with a winner-take-all fajitas showdown, where teams of grillmasters battled for the title of Fajitas King (or Queen!). But that was just a warm-up for Saturday’s main event, when 11 BBQ teams rolled out their smokers and fired up the pits at the crack of dawn, eager to serve up some of the best beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket the Texas Gulf Coast has to offer.

And let’s not forget the morning Bloody Mary competition—a beloved tradition that gave both participants and visitors a flavorful way to start the day. While the BBQ teams tended to their masterpieces, visitors perused a treasure trove of silent and live auction items. From fishing trips to home décor, outdoor furniture to homemade cakes, there was something for everyone.

Hungry guests enjoyed a delicious BBQ meal with all the fixings—plus a dessert table that could put any sweet tooth into a state of pure bliss. Judging took place throughout the afternoon, with trophies and cash prizes awarded for the top contenders in each category.

As the sun began to dip, the excitement hit a new high with the live auction at 5 p.m. Many outstanding donated items went up for grabs, with all proceeds going to support the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department—keeping our community safe and strong.

The day wrapped up with the announcement of the winning teams, who took home not just prizes but also well-earned bragging rights. It was a day full of good food, good fun, and great people—all for a fantastic cause.

If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event. The Port Bolivar VFD BBQ Cookoff is more than just a competition—it’s a community tradition that brings everyone together in support of our local heroes. See y’all next year!
