The Bolivar Peninsula, with its 27 miles of accessible coastline, offers a unique beach experience where visitors can drive, camp, and enjoy various recreational activities directly on the sand. To ensure safety and preserve the natural beauty of the area, it’s essential to adhere to local and county regulations. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the rules governing beach activities on the Bolivar Peninsula:
Beach Parking and Access
Parking Permits: All vehicles parked on the beach must display a Bolivar Beach Parking Sticker. These annual permits are available for $10 at local businesses and are valid for the calendar year. Stickers should be affixed to the lower right side of the front windshield.
Free Parking Zones: Certain areas offer free beach access. For instance, approximately 2.5 miles east from Rollover Pass to Dirty Pelican Pier is paid parking, while traveling east from there to the Chambers County line is free beach. Additionally, from Rettilon Road east to the washout (approximately 1/4 mile) is designated as free beach.
Driving on the Beach
Dune Protection: Driving or climbing on sand dunes is strictly forbidden, as dunes are protected by law. They play a crucial role in coastal protection and ecosystem balance.
Speed Limit: The maximum speed limit on the beach is 15 mph. This limit is strictly enforced to ensure the safety of all beachgoers.
Reckless Driving: Reckless driving is prohibited. Drivers must exercise caution and be vigilant for pedestrians and other vehicles.
Alcohol and Glass Containers
Open Containers: Open container laws apply to all vehicles, including ATVs, ROVs, and golf carts. It’s illegal to have open alcoholic beverages in these vehicles.
Glass Containers: Glass containers are prohibited on the beach to prevent injuries and environmental hazards.
Camping and Fires
Camping: Beach camping is permitted. Campers should ensure they do not obstruct traffic and are mindful of the tides.
Fires: Only contained campfires and cooking grills are allowed; bonfires are prohibited. Fires should be no larger than 3x3x3 feet and must be at least 10 feet away from the dunes. Always extinguish fires completely before leaving.
Motorized Vehicles
ATVs and ROVs: These vehicles are allowed on the beach but must be trailered to the beach and are not permitted on public roadways. Drivers under the age of 14 must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.
Golf Carts: Golf carts are permitted and may be driven to the beach. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license. Golf carts cannot be operated on highways but may cross them at intersections.
