We picked up The Littles after their baseball parade down Main Street in Friendswood. It’s the beginning of baseball season y’all. Daddy drove the float in the parade, Pierce rode with him, The Littles team, the Angels, rode in the back.
Daddy and Pierce had tickets to the Texas Children’s Houston Open, so we got The Littles for the rest of the weekend. Things started out pretty normal, the boys were in the backseat arguing most of the way to the beach. Normal …
It was lunchtime when we got here, so PawPaw took them up to the cookoff at the park to find something to eat. In the meantime, I went up to The Big Store for regular bread, hot dogs & hot dog buns. Oh, and a pizza. Good thing, they came back home, nothing hit their fancy at the cookoff. After some hot dogs and chips, it was bathing suits and hot tub time. Thank goodness for the hot tub! They ventured out to the pool that’s not there anymore and began playing around out there.
That’s when they found Bodie, the helpless toad. First of all, they made a pool for him. We had to remind them that toads are not like frogs, they don’t like all that much water. Then, they made a nice grassy little habitat for him in a too shallow box. Bodie kept jumping out, so they had to tape up the sides making the habitat a bit deeper.
Dinnertime for humans, reluctantly, the boys had to leave Bodie alone and thoroughly wash their hands.
Finally nighttime and time to shower and get ready for bed. No, Bodie can’t sleep in the house with us. The boys found a safe spot out in the front garden for the toad, still in captivity. PawPaw was supposed to go release Bodie after the boys went to bed, but he forgot.
First thing Sunday morning, the boys were out there in the garden to check on Bodie. All sorts of decisions were being made on how they could keep Bodie. Mommy said, “Bodie’s a Coastal Toad, he’d never make it in the city.” Mommy’s pretty smart about things like that. PawPaw and I were sure we’d never be allowed to have the boys again if we brought Bodie to Friendswood.

When it was time to take The Littles home, we asked the boys to let Bodie go. We assured them Bodie would miss them and remember them when they came to visit again.
Bodie was one ecstatic toad. THE END
