Sign Man returns to Crystal Beach

By Linda Elissalde
McHenry “Mack” Wallace is a true genius. This Rice University graduate has worked to create energy efficient edifices throughout his career as a contractor and consulting engineer. Mack writes code, renovates historic buildings and instructs nascent engineers all over the world in how to create energy efficiency in all types of buildings. Wow! What a fine intelligent, gentleman he is indeed.

However, Mr. Wallace’s main claim to fame on the Bolivar Peninsula is as SIGN MAN. Residents who spot him out and about immediately declare, “Oh, there goes Sign Man”. Mack carried a sign in San Miguel, Mexico for a parade celebrating Betty Wind’s 70th birthday. He and his lovely, creative wife Dr. Melanie Wallace, best known here as The Mother of Texas Jane Long during 7 years of The Jane Long Festival, have appeared in most of Way Off Broadway Ensemble Players productions. Mrs. Wallace creates all Mack’s signs and costumes. In addition, he never has to say a word. Sign Man just walks on stage, and the crowd erupts into laughter. Mack always receives standing ovations.

The Wallaces moved to Ovilla, Texas to be near family and grandchildren. They recently returned for a weekend to celebrate Mack’s 71st birthday. What a joyous time for friends Marcel and Linda Carole Elissalde. The Elissaldes were able to welcome their friends with a whole flounder caught by Gary Huebel and fried by Stingaree’s excellent chef. After that splendid hor d’oeuvre, each ordered a favorite seafood delight. Then a delicious slice of birthday cake adorned with lighted candle arrived. Fantastic server Cody, assisted by lovely Brandi, led the entire restaurant is a rousing chorus of, “Happy Birthday, Mack’.

Wallaces and Elissaldes spent a day on Bolivar Peninsula beach. Golf cars went back and forth for needed supplies. The gals took off for their “spiritual luncheon” at Tia Juanita’s while the boys visited by the Gulf. Finally all items were loaded up. Elissaldes shared a few more sweets before sadly bidding a fond farewell to the wonderful Wallaces. Marcel, Linda C and Emma agree that life is so much fun when SIGN MAN RETURNS TO CRYSTAL BEACH!

I was born on February 14, 1941 into a family of writers. Schmuckers took pen in hand for thank you notes, news articles, lessons, plays, poetry, birthdays, eulogies, etc. Aquarius prediction in my diary stated, “Has some writing abilities, but too superficial to be important”. Thanks to all who accept my compositions anyway. I come from a family of writers.

That was the most fun weekend! We love being with you guys and, when I asked Mack what he wanted for his birthday , without hesitation, he said, “I want to go see Marcel.”

Can’t wait to see you again. Of the many things I miss about Bolivar (and there are many), I miss you most. Xxoo
