MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS

By Linda Elissalde
There are movie cowboys, TV cowboys, singing cowboys and cartoon cowboys. Someday we might even view AI cowboys. However, REAL COWBOYS still exist. Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation (BPCF) was honored to present two real Coastal Cowboys for their July 16, 2025 meeting at Eagles 3719. Bob Kahla and Lloyd Maxwell shared fond reminiscences of growing up on ranches. These two enchanted a large audience with tales and poetry about their exciting lives. People listened, learned and laughed at their stories. Lloyd Maxwell, descendant of the Boyt Ranch family, shared memories of his distinguished ranching relatives. Bob Kahla, now a horse trainer in Stowell, Texas, spoke about his ranch life and as an award winning Saddle Bronc rider. He periodically popped up to recite some of his invigorating cowboy poetry. The audience asked numerous questions of both men during their cowboy recitations and afterwards. Lloyd and Bob graciously spoke with everyone. Mr. Kahla signed his published books for numerous guests.

BPCF greeters hand attendees a numbered ticket on entry. Tickets are placed in a special jar. Treasurer Elinor Tinsley’s handsome grandson JP pulled 2 winning tickets out of this jar at the closing. Betsy Hines won a bottle of special Rose Wine. Susan Ramsey won a gift certificate to Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp. Lloyd Maxwell and Bob Kahla were each given $75. Eagles 3719 received $100 for use of the room. Everyone enjoyed fabulous cuisine provided by Brenda Lewis, Amy Lail and Board Members.

Meeting Coastal Cowboys Lloyd Maxwell and Bob Kahla was a thrill. I agree with Waylon and Willie. MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS.

There is still more to come with BPCF. President Vicky Norris, Vice President Ange Scheibel, Secretary Sandi Covington, Treasurer/Membership Elinor Tinsley, Members at Large Marsha Fredenburg, Sherry Morgan and Linda Chesser already have plans for future exciting events. Mark your calendars for 5:30 PM, August 20, 2025. Popular speaker Dr. Ron Chesser is returning to present another of his exhilarating lectures. “Dismantling Iraq’s Nuclear Infrastructure” is the subject. Ron is a genius at presentations.

Do not put that calendar away yet. Circle Saturday, September 20,2025 for the BPCF annual FALL ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR. More information will arrive closer to that date.

Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation provides fascinating, informative lectures and delightfully fun events. They continually honor the history, music and art that make Bolivar Peninsula a unique place to visit and to live.

I was born on February 14, 1941 into a family of writers. Schmuckers took pen in hand for thank you notes, news articles, lessons, plays, poetry, birthdays, eulogies, etc. Aquarius prediction in my diary stated, “Has some writing abilities, but too superficial to be important”. Thanks to all who accept my compositions anyway. I come from a family of writers.
