I loved my Beach Gift and wanted to share

Meet Linda Roman, a 75-year-old Gilchrist resident whose birthday celebration took a heartwarming turn. Instead of traditional gifts, her family surprised her with a Texas Adopt-A-Beach certificate—a pledge to keep their adopted stretch of shoreline clean together. For Linda, it was more than just a present; it was a chance to give back to the coast she loves while creating lasting memories with her loved ones. Here is her inspiring story:

On June 28th I had my 75th birthday. My daughter says I’m very difficult to buy gifts for, but she chose the perfect present—Texas General Land Office “Adopt a Beach Program” (Gayle Street Area). We went to work immediately!

I am so proud of “my” beach—in the same space between two blue trash bins where we collected seven trash bags last week, yesterday three bags, and today just one bag was collected. I am exercising, walking the beach, and enjoying the coastal life.

(We wonder if anyone knows why there are so many plastic bottle caps and so few plastic bottles? And why so many yogurt drink bottles? And beach footwear, usually just one shoe of the pair? Lots of plastic bait bags, fishing string, but no sand dollars).

Thanks for reading,
Linda Roman
