A WIN FOR MOTHER NATURE! A WIN FOR BOLIVAR PENINSULA!

By Linda Elissalde
Why do people visit Bolivar Peninsula? There are multiple reasons. Some are The Gulf, warm water, an open beach, seafood, fishing and crabbing. However, a main worldwide attraction is the variety of birds that either call it home or pass by on their flights heading north or south. Bolivar is popular with locals and visitors from nearby and faraway place

Morning of March 7, 2026 brought many to BURKETT TRACT to enjoy viewing shorebirds and migratory birds along the mudflats. A huge contingency arrived via bus from Houston. This was not only a day for the pleasures of bird watching, but also a day of celebration. Houston Audubon had successfully completed the “Save Bolivar” campaign. Now 1,307.83 acres, one of the most ecologically significant coastal habitats in the world, is permanently safeguarded from development.

Houston Audubon President & CEO Jed Aplaca welcomed all gathered for the dedication of BOLIVAR FLATS SHOREBIRD SANCTUARY. He thanked all who had helped gain a win for the birds and the legacy of Texas conservation. These included millions of dollars from organizations and private donors from all over the world. Mr. Aplaca explained that it will be a part of Bolivar Peninsula Nature Trail. “This project will eventually connect 12 world-class sites across the Peninsula-from the ferry landing to High Island. By the time this trail is completed in 2027, this land won’t just be a sanctuary; it will be a destination for education, exploration, and economic growth for the entire Bolivar community.”

I was born on February 14, 1941 into a family of writers. Schmuckers took pen in hand for thank you notes, news articles, lessons, plays, poetry, birthdays, eulogies, etc. Aquarius prediction in my diary stated, “Has some writing abilities, but too superficial to be important”. Thanks to all who accept my compositions anyway. I come from a family of writers.
