Camping along the Bolivar Peninsula offers a unique coastal experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Texas’s Gulf Coast. With 27 miles of accessible beaches, the peninsula provides ample opportunities for both tent and RV camping. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan your camping adventure.
Where to Camp
Camping is permitted along the entire stretch of Bolivar Peninsula’s beaches. Popular areas include:
East End Near High Island: Closer to High Island, this area features narrower beaches but still provides ample space for tents and travel trailers.
Crystal Beach: This central area is favored by campers due to its proximity to stores and restaurants. However, it can become crowded during summer weekends.
The Flats: Located on the west end of the peninsula, this wide beach area lacks nearby houses, offering a more secluded experience. Access is via Rettilon Road off Highway 87, approximately 3.7 miles from the ferry landing.
Permits and Regulations
Beach Parking Sticker: All vehicles parked on the beach must display a Bolivar Beach Parking Sticker. These are available for $10 at local businesses and are valid for the calendar year.
Camping Permits: Currently, no additional permits are required specifically for camping on the beach.
Best Practices and Tips
Restroom Facilities: Restroom facilities and rinse-off showers are available at the Bolivar Beach Pavilion on Crystal Beach Road (behind the Fire Station). Public restrooms are also located at The Big Store, with additional porta-potties scattered along the peninsula. Note that there are no public showers on Bolivar.
Tide Awareness: Before setting up camp, check tide charts to avoid high tide zones. Position your campsite closer to the dunes but ensure you’re not on protected dune areas.
Trash Disposal: Maintain the beach’s cleanliness by using the trash containers provided along the peninsula. Pack out all your trash if containers are full or unavailable.
Campfires: Contained campfires and cooking grills are allowed; however, bonfires are prohibited. Always extinguish fires completely before leaving.
Customs and Courtesies
Noise Levels: Be considerate of fellow campers by keeping noise to a minimum, especially during nighttime hours.
Wildlife Respect: The peninsula is home to various wildlife species. Avoid disturbing animals and ensure food is stored securely to prevent attracting them to your campsite.
Pet Guidelines: Pets must be on a leash at all times. Clean up after your pets to maintain a pleasant environment for all visitors.
Additional Considerations
Driving on the Beach: The speed limit on the beach is 15 mph. Reckless driving is prohibited, and vehicles are not allowed on sand dunes or off-road on private property.
Glass Containers: Glass containers are prohibited on the beach to prevent injuries and environmental hazards.
Open Containers: Open container laws apply to all vehicles, including ATVs, ROVs, and golf carts.
By adhering to these guidelines and respecting the natural environment, campers can enjoy a safe and memorable experience on the Bolivar Peninsula’s beautiful beaches.
