Falling Back: The Glorious (and Confusing) Return of an Hour We Never Asked For

Remember back in March when we groggily stumbled out of bed, cursing the heavens, science, and Benjamin Franklin for robbing us of sixty precious minutes of sleep? Well, the cosmic ledger is finally balancing out. It’s time to fall back.

Just as the scorching Texas heat finally decides to loosen its grip on the Bolivar Peninsula and give us weather that doesn’t make us question our life choices, the universe hands us a golden parachute: an extra hour of time.

Of course, “gaining an hour” sounds a lot more majestic on paper than it actually plays out in real life. Let’s be honest about how this usually goes:

  • The 2:00 AM Bonus: If you’re asleep at 2:00 AM when the clocks officially roll back to 1:00 AM, you’re likely just banking an extra hour of weekend sleep. Fantastic. Zero complaints here.
  • The 6:00 PM Disappointment: If you’re awake, you get to experience the psychological thriller of watching the sun completely vanish from the sky right around dinnertime. Nothing screams “relaxing evening” quite like looking outside at 5:30 PM and thinking it’s time to lock the doors, draw the curtains, and prepare for hibernation.
  • The Domestic Tech Support Marathon: For the next three weeks, at least one person in your household will stubbornly refuse to change the clock on their car dashboard, their stove, or that one mysterious wall clock in the garage that requires a ladder and a prayer to reach.

On the bright side, an extra hour means an extra sixty minutes to enjoy a sunrise walk on the beach, a little more time to cast a line off the shore, or simply an extra hour on Sunday to sit on the porch and listen to the waves without feeling like the weekend is slipping through your fingers quite as fast.

It’s the closest thing we have to time travel—except instead of flying DeLoreans, we’re just arguing with our smart phones over whether they updated automatically.

So enjoy that extra hour this weekend, Crystal Beach. Soak up the sunset, savor the cooler breeze, and try not to panic when it gets pitch black outside just as you’re finishing up afternoon yard work.
