Sun, Sand, and Poker: The Golf Cart Poker Run Rolls On

Despite a week filled with ominous forecasts, Saturday morning greeted Crystal Beach with blue skies, setting the perfect stage for one of the community’s favorite annual traditions — the Golf Cart Poker Run. Known for its festive spirit and generosity, this year’s event did not disappoint.

Golf carts began lining up at Jose’s Cantina as early as 7 a.m., with nearly 500 entries checked in by start time. Participants received a t-shirt, scorecard, and their first playing card, officially kicking off a day filled with beach cruising, laughter, and charitable giving.

At 9:30 a.m., a colorful parade of 172 decorated golf carts rolled down the beach toward the first stop at Tiki Beach Bar and Grill, where the party atmosphere kicked into full swing and the second card was drawn. Judges circulated through the crowd to evaluate carts for the coveted Best Decorated prize, admiring everything from tropical themes to patriotic displays.

The third stop brought participants to the lively Nauti Beaver Hut, where carts packed into every available space and the good vibes continued. Throughout the route, local law enforcement teams provided flawless support, helping carts safely cross highways with minimal disruption to traffic — a well-oiled process that kept the day flowing smoothly.

The fourth destination, The Eagles, offered much-needed shade and a complimentary snack basket to give attendees a break from the heat and time to enjoy some community camaraderie.

The final leg to the Stingaree was the longest stretch, and nature decided to make one last appearance. A sudden downpour hit just as the carts arrived, but spirits were far from dampened. Soaked but smiling, players drew their final card, completing their poker hands.

Then came the evening’s highlights: a live auction featuring a slate of truly unique items, including:

  • An exclusive invitation to the grand opening of the restored Battleship Texas
  • The “first cast” opportunity at the soon-to-be-completed Rollover Fishing Pier
  • A private dinner for eight at the historic Bolivar Point Lighthouse

Awards followed for the Best Decorated Golf Cart, and the “Largest Group” honor went to “Team Groovy” for an impressive 10th consecutive year. The celebration was capped off with heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, and participants who made the day possible.

Most importantly, all proceeds from this year’s Poker Run will go to benefit schools and fire departments in the Texas Hill Country recently devastated by flooding — a powerful reminder of how this fun-filled event also makes a real difference.

With great memories and even greater impact, this year’s Poker Run will be hard to top. But one thing’s for sure: we’re already looking forward to next year.
