Leading with Heart and Vision on the Bolivar Peninsula

Beth Terminella, president of the Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, sat down for a candid interview to reflect on her leadership, challenges facing the local business community, and her hopes for the future of the Chamber and the Peninsula at large. Her answers revealed a passionate leader guided by humility, optimism, and an appreciation for connection.

Beth’s journey to Chamber presidency was rooted in a sense of responsibility and admiration for Anne Willis. “Her health wasn’t there,” Beth said, “but her heart was so big.” That spirit inspired Beth to step in and continue what Anne had built. With previous Chamber experience under her belt, Beth sought not only to honor that legacy but to elevate the organization: “We needed to step up our game and be better.”

Despite her humility—“I don’t think I’m a great leader”—Beth’s leadership style is clearly impactful. She credits her effectiveness to the team around her and the power of personal engagement. “A personal ask goes a long way,” she emphasized, describing her belief that true leadership is about empowering others, not issuing directives from afar.

Beth outlined the challenges for businesses on Bolivar Peninsula: workforce shortages, lack of affordable housing, infrastructure limitations, and the inherent ups and downs of a seasonal economy. “If you’re not prepared as a business owner to save up your nuts like a little squirrel, you’re gonna be in trouble,” she quipped.

To address those off-season lulls, the Chamber has spearheaded campaigns like “Fall in Love with Bolivar” and is exploring new events and partnerships with local businesses and realtors to attract visitors and keep momentum year-round.

Beth described Chamber membership as a powerful resource, especially for small businesses. “It’s kind of like an association,” she explained. “If you’re a small business, you have the power of that whole group.” Whether it’s connecting with other members at mixers, building partnerships, or gaining visibility through sponsored events like Lunch and Learns, the Chamber serves as a bridge to opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach.

The Chamber also plays a critical role of advocacy. When policy decisions threaten local businesses, the Chamber amplifies their voices with unified support. “A letter from the Chamber goes a long way,” Beth said, pointing out the strength of speaking on behalf of over 160 member businesses.

Since Beth took the helm, Chamber events have seen increased participation. From well-attended mixers to informative quarterly meetings featuring guest speakers, there’s been a noticeable uptick in member engagement. The Chamber has responded with improved communication tactics—like using text message reminders to reach members more effectively.

Beth sees placing “the right people in the right place” as a major success during her tenure. This includes not just staff but also committee chairs and volunteers. Creating a sense of purpose and value for each contributor has been central to her leadership philosophy.

Of course, leadership has not come without hurdles. The biggest, according to Beth, is overcoming the “that’s not how we’ve always done it” mindset. But she welcomes experimentation and change: “Things don’t always work, but I’m going to try.”

Looking ahead, Beth wants to see the Chamber embrace technology and structure. A major initiative currently underway is the development of a five-year strategic plan. “We’ve never had one,” she said. “And we need a guideline.” The plan will help align decisions, from computer systems to membership dues, with a shared vision for growth and sustainability.

What’s Beth’s favorite part of being president? Without hesitation: “Getting to know people.” She acknowledged how much the Peninsula is changing and how important it is to keep building connections in the face of that change. “Change is good,” she said, even if it means watching others take a different path after her term ends.

Beth measures success not just in metrics, but in the vitality of the community. “I love seeing our businesses full,” she said. A packed parking lot at a local shop is, for her, a sign that the Chamber is doing its job.

To businesses considering membership, Beth’s message is clear: join and participate. “Use everything the Chamber has to offer,” she urged. From email blasts to business spotlights, members often don’t realize the full scope of resources available to them.

To the next Chamber president, Beth offers this wisdom: embrace change. “They’ll have a different leadership style, and that’s okay. It’s time for that.”

As Beth Terminella prepares for the next phase of her leadership journey, her impact on the Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is already evident—in renewed engagement, stronger connections, and a strategic path forward. Her approach may be understated, but her results speak volumes.

“Join the Chamber,” she concluded. “Volunteer with us. Come to a meeting. See what we’re about. We have fun, but we’re strategic too. It’s a good place to be.”

And under her leadership, it’s only gotten better.
