Why do churches celebrate Pentecost?
Why do worshippers wear red?
Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus; It is the birth of the Christian Church. The name comes from the Greek word pentekoste which means fiftieth. It is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter. That is fifty days after Easter. Red is worn on this Sunday to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirit and binds together all who believe in Christ’s love.
Bay Vue Methodist (BVM) celebrated this year with special decorations honoring the birth of the church. Pastor Valerie Hudson, along with Denise Boyd and volunteers, imbued the sanctuary with lovely red banners and flowers. Everyone was invited to wear red if they wished. Roy Kincaid gifted Bay Vue with a 3 octave set of bells. A special music service included performances by Bay Vue’s new bell choir accompanied by chimes and choral choir.
Everyone enjoyed the special food selections in Fellowship Hall following the service. Elinor Tinsley and her group served an outstanding meal. Elinor also created a special cupcake tower with red velvet cake to honor Pentecost. She decorated these delicious sweets with letters to spell out Happy Birthday.
Members and guests found warmth in the blessings provided by red decorations, special music, and an inspiring sermon followed by food and fellowship. This was a most special Sunday as BAY VUE METHODIST CHURCH CELEBRATED PENTECOST!
