Letters for March 23, 2008 +++Residents of the Bolivar Peninsula have complained about the behavior of crowds on their beaches. On Peninsula Beaches, The Law Is Ignored Is the beach a playground or a highway? The state of Texas says the beach on Bolivar Peninsula is a state road. If this is indeed the case, why aren’t the laws enforced accordingly? There is a speed limit that is completely ignored. We are required to have a valid driver’s license to drive on any Texas highway, road or street. Yet, children well below the legal driving age are allowed to drive golf carts and unlicensed vehicles. We are required by law to wear safety belts, whether driving or as a passenger. It is against Texas driving laws to ride in the back of a pick-up or any other open vehicle. And, most importantly, we have an open-container law that prohibits us from driving and drinking. Yet, on the beaches of Bolivar Peninsula, all these laws are consistently broken and ignored. Why?
