Hi,
I am a stupid tourist from Marshall, TX that did not evacuate in time.
I had to leave my van at Fort Travis parked up to the bunker next to
Mike Shelley's truck, Pam's car and Gene Brooks' truck & his
wife's car. Also a man had a camper trailer & he stayed in the
bunker with others during the storm.
A hero of the storm Mr. Tinker Hughes led us to the Fort & went on to save Mrs. Sandra Price & her husband from the storm surge in an army truck. He also stayed behind. Last we heard he was on a 60 foot boat with a man named William heading for Florida. The coast guard flew the rest of us out to LaMarque & took us by bus to Austin. Mr & Mrs. Brooks were picked up by their daughter & taken to their home. Mr. & Mrs. Price were taken to a nursing home & then to their daughters. Norma Hedger & her husband were trying to contact family. Mike & Debbie Shelley were with friends in Whitney, TX. A young lady that had recent heart surgery was taken to a hospital in Austin. The UTMB E.R. doctors that were plucked from their truck in Gilchrist, Patricia Musick & Les McCall, a tall business man with long hair, a Vietnam vet, a young man & his mother, & several others rescued from the Crenshaw school were taken to a shelter in Austin. My friend & I rented a car at the Austin airport on Sat. aft. & drove home to Marshall coming in right behind the storm. There were downed trees all over the roads & no electricity from Jacksonville to Marshall. I have looked at as many of the photos & videos as I have been able to find of the peninsula. I can not find any of Fort Travis & the condition of the many cars, trucks, & trailers that were left there, Also no stories of the welfare of the people that stayed & rode out the storm in the bunker. As we were being flown out a Red Cross lady was zip tying toe tags on these people's ankles & writing their S.S. #'s on their arms. Do you know if there are any photos or reports? I did find the satellite image taken on 9/14 that showed Fort Travis after Ike & it looked like everything faired very well. If there are not any ground photos would it be possible if someone could go to the Fort & check on things & see how things look? Maybe they could take a few photos & post them to let us know how our vehicles faired. Also if you could find out how the people are. Thank you, Ermene Ford |
